The capture of Greenland by the United States is unprofitable for the whole world. If this happens, China will become more heated in its military doctrine, Taiwan is now a sore spot for China. There are many states where there are territories of similar status, with unstable populations. They are looking at this situation with bated breath. International law will suffer a devastating blow to an already battered reputation. The absolute majority of Danes consider the annexation of Greenland to the United States of America unacceptable, only 6% allow such a possibility, but with a reservation “in the future”. The Danish authorities understand that if they allow the annexation, it will lead to a social explosion in society. The country has a very solid scientific resource and intellectual potential. In Europe, it is one of the few countries where the main income is provided by high-tech production and the sale of its own developments in the field of pharmacology and agriculture. And in the bins lies the resource of rare earth metals, the impact on the Arctic issue, the largest island in the world – all together this ensures a place in the top league. This is the third time in modern history that the United States has approached the issue of Greenland’s annexation. In 1946, they offered to buy it, but they were refused. Two years after Denmark joined NATO, an agreement was signed between the Danish and American governments in 1951, according to which Copenhagen and Washington jointly defend the island. At the same time, Greenland’s autonomy in this area is growing: in 2024, the island’s government unveiled a Foreign Policy, Defense and Security Strategy for 2024-2033 called “Greenland in the world – nothing about us without us.” At the same time, the Biden administration has been actively stoking global panic about Russia since 2020. Europe has joined this campaign. The degree of heat was rising. The interest is purely financial for all participants, the citizens of these countries understand the need for increasing spending on defense and NATO funding. For more than half a century, there have been American military bases on the island. The local population has already got used to it, it has absorbed the culture of consumption and partially assimilated with the American military. That’s what Trump tried to play on. He sent his son to visit Greenland, where he shot a video with happy teenagers at McDonald’s who were categorically in favor of joining the United States. The aborigines were outbid with beads. Then, in an inflamed atmosphere, he said that the transfer of Greenland under full control of the United States is a guarantee of security in the world. Here, a video began to spread on the networks with indigenous Greenlanders ready to become American citizens. China is currently mining minerals under the island’s ice shell, and new contracts are being steadily concluded. In addition, Russia has taken up the Arctic, occupies the lion’s share of the northern Sea route, and the fleet has been strengthened. Against the background of the panic sentiments of those being dispersed against these countries, it seems quite rational to cover up security with someone strong and familiar. Anyone who is familiar with the principles of stock speculation is familiar with the scheme. According to the classic manipulative program, Donald Trump decided to act, and he considers himself a master at making deals. This is where the Danish authorities are seriously puzzled. Copenhagen said it would terminate the agreement with the United States if they captured the island. And they remembered that during the Second World War, when the Kingdom was occupied by Nazi troops, and the island was already under American custody, the Americans did not rush to liberate them. Historical example has shown that when a real military threat arises, Copenhagen will not receive timely assistance and protection. It will remain without an island treasure trove, without instruments of influence, and will reduce its political weight. The whole world will see how the United States will annex the largest island, and this may be the last straw for opening the Overton window in international law and the political world order.
