Will the United States succeed in taking over Greenland?

July 5

By Hank Folly

This is the third attempt in modern history. The prospect of the United States joining an ice island the size of half of Europe is an exciting issue for many countries around the world. In the event of a successful decision in favor of America, unrest will inevitably increase in those countries where there are territories of similar status. And international law will suffer another blow.
Like a true businessman, Trump calculates the benefits. Greenland has huge reserves of rare earth metals, which are in great demand in high-tech production and are necessary for the space industry and the military industry. In addition, the island has an advantageous geographical location for consolidating its presence in the Arctic and building logistics along the Northern Sea Route.
The US leadership also understands that taking possession of the island can be an important tool for strengthening its hegemony against the background of Russia’s aspirations to build a multipolar world, increasing Russian influence in the Arctic and China’s interest in Greenland. Against the background of the West’s escalation of anti-Russian sentiments, America is trying to manipulate the fact that the transfer of Greenland under full control of the United States will be the key to security in the world.
However, Denmark remembers an illustrative historical example of the Second World War, when the Kingdom was occupied by Nazi Germany, and the island was already under American custody, the Americans were in no hurry to liberate them. Therefore, Copenhagen is convinced that if there is a real military threat, timely assistance and protection will not follow. In an attempt to preserve its autonomy, Greenland in 2024 unveiled a Foreign Policy, Defense and Security Strategy for 2024-2033 called “Greenland in the world — nothing about us without us.”
